Two Poets Remember Hurricane Katrina At Observable Readings

Nicole Cooley and Brad Richard, two poets who have written about Hurricane Katrina, will share their work at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, at the Schlafly Bottleworks, 7260 Southwest Ave. in Maplewood, as part of the Observable Readings series. Admission is free.

Nicole CooleyBrad Richard

A native of New Orleans, Nicole Cooley found herself half a continent away when Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast in August 2005. The following August, Cooley and her family drove Highway 90 from Florida to New Orleans through the devastation that Katrina had left behind. Cooley then began work on a book of poems titled Breach, a stunningly passionate and accomplished response to the disaster. She is a professor of English at Queens College-City University of New York, where she directs the MFA program in creative writing and literary translation.

Katrina-flooded New Orleans also is the setting for the meditations in Motion Studies, the most recent work of Brad Richard. His other works are Habitations and a chapbook titled The Men in the Dark. Richard chairs the creative writing program at Lusher Charter High school in New Orleans.

Arts Education grant approved for Midtown project

"This is to let you know that your Arts Education grant application, requesting support
for an out of school project at Midtown Community Center, has been approved...."

We are very excited to have received nearly $2000 in a mini-grant from the Missouri Arts Council toward our Poetry Program at Midtown.  As with most grants, we will need to match the gift with an equivalent amont from our own resources.... so DONATE to "2011" with your own $20.11 and help us raise another $2000, painlessly!
The kids at Midtown, ages 6 - 16, will thank you, and so will our poet educators!  Watch the website for photos.

Donate $20.11 to give local poetry programs a boost

Celebrate poetry and send $20.11 to the St. Louis Poetry Center. Where are your dollars more useful than working to support local poetry programs? Yeah, that's right, of course there's no better place!

We will be accepting 2011 mini-campaign gifts until we finish the program at Midtown in May 2011.  So get on board and support poetry and youth in the city.  Received as of March 2011: $301.65.

The program is underway with poets Janie Ibur and Rennell Parker--so give up those lattes and send cash!

Donate online - You don't have to have PayPal, a credit card is fine (and it's secure).  Go to our Membership & Donation page, where you'll find a general donation option near the bottom of the page -- look for the button that says "I would like to provide additional support to this historic organization. Please receive my tax-deductible contribution of ..." and send in your $20.11.

Or, support your local post office too, and snail-mail us a check to 567 North and South, #8, St. Louis, MO 63130.

Keep your Poetry Center going!
